Grandma’s Meatloaf
Getting a little sentimental with ya tonight. Tonight for dinner we had meatloaf, and not just any meatloaf, but my late Grandma Lehmann’s meatloaf recipe. I have written in my baby book that this was my first table food. Though I realize it is a pretty standard recipe for meatloaf, as many of our favorite homestyle meals are, it being hers and reading it in her handwriting makes it even tastier. But on a real note, it was seriously fantastic. However, I she also used to make one with Piquant Sauce, which I will note to make again to share on here. But tonight I made it with a brown gravy I will share as well and paired the meal on top of some creamy mashed potatoes and some peas and pearl onions.
Ingredients
Meatloaf
- 2/3 Cup Bread Crumbs
- 1 Cup Whole Milk
- 1.5 Pounds Ground Beef
- 2 Beaten Eggs
- 1/4 Cup Grated Onion
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Ground Sage
- Dash of Pepper
Brown Gravy
- 3 Tbsp Butter
- 3 Tbsp Flour
- 2-2.5 Cups Chicken Broth (This is an eye baller depending on how much gravy you want.)
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Kitchen Bouquet
- Salt and Pepper to Taste
Instructions
Meatloaf
- Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit
- Get down and dirty, and start mixing all of the ingredients for the meatloaf with your hands.
- Once all ingredients are well incorporated together, put into a greased loaf pan, and bake in the oven for 45 min-1 hour. This may vary on your oven, just make sure when it comes out that it reads to 160 degrees Fahrenheit on a meat thermometer.
Gravy
- Melt butter in a skillet or wide sauce pan, and add flour tbsp at a time while whisking, to make a roux. Now add your broth a little at a time, stirring while you pour to mix well. It should start to thicken fairly quick, pour enough till you have the amount you want. *Note: if you find your gravy isn’t thick enough, you can always mix a little cornstarch and cold water to make a cornstarch slurry, pour it in your gravy and whisk it in and it should thicken it up pretty quick.
- Add the last remaining ingredients and whisk together. As always remember to taste as you go so everything is to your liking.
Notes
You can do this whichever way you want:
-put meatloaf in gravy pan and ladle on your gravy.
-Slice meatloaf by itself and pour gravy on top after. It’s all preference.
-Siding suggestion: this went fantastic with creamy mashed potatoes and peas and pearly onions. Enjoy!
